Juliette Villemin was a choreographer, dancer and dance teacher.
She was trained in classical ballet in Bilbao (Spain) and was a soloist at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Euskadian Ballet Bilbao, among others. As a freelance dancer, she worked with Izik Galili, Nina Kurzeja, Malaika Kusumi, Alexandra Rauh and Marco Santi, among others. Since 2003 she has been teaching regularly at various dance institutions and universities and leading projects in the field of cultural education. In 2010 she received her Master of Arts in contemporary dance education at the University of Music and Performing Arts Frankfurt/Main.
In 2005 she created her first solo piece “bestselbstseller/ all-ein”, which was awarded Best German Dance Solo at the euro-scene Leipzig festival. This was followed by further works and choreographies that were shown at festivals at home and abroad. Her research into the modern dance with the title “Monte Verità – Raumdeutungen”, a TANZFONDS ERBE project – an initiative of the Federal Cultural Foundation – premiered in June 2014 in Stuttgart and was also shown at the Bauhaus Dessau and at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. In June 2017, her production “SYNCHRONICITY” premiered at the FiTZ Stuttgart and was also celebrated by the audience and press at the “Tanz im Delta” festival in Mannheim. Her piece “Phobiagora” dealt with fear and was shown at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart in 2018. Pieces that were shaped by the corona pandemic followed: “Die Begehrenden” (2020) was rehearsed under special hay challenges and finally performed in the Theaterhaus Stuttgart. “Die Seherinnen” (2021) was sseking for non-verbal communication and is based on the body language of 16 people. This production was accompanied by the documentary THE UNSEEN SIGN, which premiered postmortem in the cinema Atelier im Bollwerk. Her last production “INTIMACY” was created in 2022 with an intergenerational cast and was intended to be the first of a three-part series about the private and public.
Juliette Villemin died unexpectedly on January 8, 2023.
Her artistic works are valued as profound and truthful examinations of the human body. Starting from the essential qualities of human movement, the socialized behavior and movement patterns became the starting point for specific dance and movement vocabularies, which she transformed into poetic forms and moving images.
As a committed member of the Produktionszentrum Tanz + Performance e.V. Stuttgart she engaged to the interests of the independent dance scene in Stuttgart for almost 20 years and has had a decisive influence on it through her great commitment and her inspiring personality.
After her death, Produktion Juliette Villemin GbR (Anika Bendel, Luisa Budscherak, Bernhard Eusterschulte) was founded to manage the artistic estate.
